We use "Glass Carboys" to store and age our wines in our Wine Cave.. completely eliminating the need to use oak barrels.... Oak trees can live for hundreds of years and store up countless tons of carbon in their wood.  As with all glass, our "Glass Carboys" can be reused over and over again, forever. Thus completely eliminating our carbon footprint.

We grow "ALL" of our own grapes and elderberries. We have no need to import juice from anywhere and burn fossil fuels.  Our grape processing equipment (crusher~destemmer, ratchet press, etc) is manually operated. This eliminates the need to burn fossil fuel for electricity.

We irrigate using water from a "Seep Spring" and move this water, stored in a 1350 gal cistern, to our grapes using the energy from the sun. (see photo of Solar Panels).  We use only "drip irrigation" in our vineyard, it is the most efficient way to distribute water to our vines.

What makes us an Environmentally Responsible Winery (ERW)?

The use of 100% recycled wine bottles allows us to reduce our carbon footprint by a "WHOPPING" 60%.

Our "Steel Buildings" are 100% recyclable. When our buildings reach the end of their lifespan (in 50 + years), they can be totally recycled. Located within one of our "Steel Buildings" we have our "wine cave". The use of natural/native storm damaged trees from our own land for our wine cave gondolas creates a 0% carbon footprint and helps us manage our forests to their best advantage. Our buildings use only energy efficient...compact fluorescent lighting (both inside and outside)!  We have no windows in our buildings...another way to reduce and/or eliminate the loss of energy.

One of the many great advantages being an "Environmentally Responsible Winery", we believe, is that this keeps us close to our wines throughout their birthing and maturing process. This adds to the "Handcrafting" of our wines.

Larry & Lenora Woodham wish you a "warm" welcome from Bunker Hill Vineyard & Winery!
